Jianfeng Ridge, Ledong County of Hainan Province 

Located within the boundaries of the Li national minority Ledong autonomous county, Jianfeng Ridge is China’s southernmost and largest tropical rain forest park. The highest peak on the ridge soars to 1412 metres whilst the lowest point is only 200 metres above sea level. This difference in elevation gives rise to no less than eight different ecological systems boasting 2,800 different ferns, 300 species of trees and 4300 types of animals. Living fossil trees, dating back more than 200 million years are scattered all around along with numerous rare plants and animals. The park contains more than 400 species of butterfly — more than any other location in China.

Itinerary

Day 1: Departure from Sanya / Excursion

Leave Sanya at 09:00 to arrive at Jianfeng Ridge at 11:30. Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant at 13:00 view the unique and mysterious deer tree before setting of up the ridge. At 15:00 arrive at the peak and view the distant Tianchi Lake (天池), boundless forest, the wide sea and the floating cloud formations. At 16:00 descend the ridge to the overnight camp site arriving at 17:00. Pitch tents and then enjoy an outdoor barbecue before settling down for the night.

Day 2: Excursions / Return to Sanya

Break camp at 7:00 and set off after breakfast to explore the rainforest. Wander in the Sky Garden (空中花园) amongst the huge ancient trees including the rattan, with its huge dangling vines, and the living fossil tree. At 11:30 visit the Mandarin Duck Waterfall (鸳鸯瀑布) followed by lunch and a rest at the mountain springs. After lunch, follow the path down the ridge whilst watching the numerous butterflies dancing on the breeze. At 18:30 say goodbye to Jian Feng Ling for the return journey to Sanya.
