Haikou Crater Cluster World Geopark. [www. haihainan.com] |
China Leiqiong Haikou Crater Cluster World Geopark lies in southwest Haikou City, merely 15km from Haikou downtown. The Park gives a great insight into the early formation of Hainan Island. It covers 180 square kilometers and consists of over 40 Quaternary volcanoes with a number of lava landscapes and some 30 volcanic caves.
Shishan is one of the dormant volcano clusters erupting about 10,000 years ago, which is rare in China. It has unique geographic landscape and rich geological resources (Spa and hot spring) and is favorably called 'Garden in the City' and honored as 'Haikou's Green Lung'.
The eruption of the ancient Qiongbei Volcano left the most intact volcano craters here. According to geologists, the last eruption happened about 13,000 years ago. And now, 36 relics of the craters can be seen here. Reaching the top, you can descend the various paths to the caves inside the extinct volcano.
Now, the park has the Volcano Cultural Garden, Ecological Garden, the Green Corridor, and the Crater's Garden, attracting visitors from both home and abroad. Visitors can also try the local rustic snacks and purchase the local handiworks.
Admission: 60 yuan.
How to get there: take bus 24 from the city centre to XiuYing Xiao Zhan and then take the Xiuying to Shishan minibus to the geological park.
