Bo'ao Golf & Country Club is in Asia the only one links golf course that covers the entire tiny, sandy island of Shapo situated at the mouth of Wanquan River and forming the Bo'ao International Comprehensive Holiday Area together with a few other small islands. Transport to and from the main island is by boat.
In terms of special landscape, the course parallels the Gold Coast of Australia, St Andrews in Scotland and Hawaii. Moreover, it is the only one entire island links course in Asia. It is built totally upon the original landscape. The natural plant and surrounding have been kept unchanged. The course merges into the adjacent wild world perfectly. Wild animals and plants spreading over the island, however, require a higher level of golf technique and strategy.
The tough hole of the course is the par-4 454-yard dogleg-left seventh that has water on the left all the way to an irregularly-shaped green. The right side of the fairway is none too friendly with orchard of wild fruits trees posing as a “no-go” area. The par-5 585-yard third hole is a real challenge with the fairway in the shape of an elongated “S” and with water on both sides of the strip of the second half leading to the green. Both power and accuracy are needed. The short par-3 171-yard 11th hole is a teaser which requires a good carry over a wide expanse of water up to the end of the third quarter before finding land leading to a generous green well guarded by a wide bunker on the left side.
The challenging course is regarded as “one of the golf courses with most special features in China”, commented Mr.Cui Zhiqiang, Secretary General of China Golf Association. After playing on the course, Mr. Francisco Frangary, Secretary General of World Tourist Organization exclaimed, “A too beautiful site for such a nasty game! But I enjoyed it very much.”
